About Nevada RoofingNevada roofers banded together in 1999, forming the Roofing Contractors of Nevada organization to battle legislation they say would have placed an unfair burden on them. Their formation gave the state's roofers a formal organization for their craft as well as a force in dealing with building and government officials. There are both north and south branches in the state. Typical Climate In NevadaThe driest state in the United States, Nevada experiences significant daily temperature variations. Contrary to popular opinion, the state does have its cold spells, with normal daily temperatures in Reno ranging from 32 degrees in January to 69 degrees in July. All-time highs show the extremes--with 125 degrees set in 1994 as the high for the state, and -50 degrees the low, set in 1937. The mountains predictably influence the climate significantly and, while the state gets only 7.5 inches of rain a year, snowfall in the mountains can reach 60 inches a year at the highest peaks. Common Roofing Issues In NevadaBecause of the lack of harsh weather in Nevada, adverse conditions that would damage roofs are rare. It is, however, advised to install an energy efficient roof system, particularly because of the potentially high temperatures. ENERGY STAR bases its approvals for roofing products on reflectivity, keeping the roof and home from absorbing too much heat. Licensing In NevadaRoofing contractors must be licensed to bid or work on jobs in Nevada. The State Contractors Board has a separate classification that covers roofing and siding contractors under the same umbrella. However, there's a subclassification--a C-15A license--that's specifically for roofing contractors without granting siding permissions. Per the state: "This license allows the installation, application, alteration and repair of watertight and weatherproof material used on roofs, such as asphalt, pitch, tar, felt, shakes, shingles, aluminum, tile, slate and urethane but not the installation of siding or devices, such as stripping, for the internal control of the effects of weather." Legal Issues and ComplaintsIn Nevada, there's a process regarding construction defects known as Chapter 40. Though some argue that the process is lengthy and convoluted, several consumers contend the law is invaluable to them in being able to get repairs for faulty work corrected. However, contractors criticize the system because through it lawyers and homeowners can pursue financial settlement rather than giving the contractor the chance to go in and do the repair. For this reason, contractors are currently fighting to get the law/process changed.
