Typical Climate in the State Capital

Mild winters and hot summers make Austin a favorite place to live for many people who enjoy the usually sunny skies all year round. Its humid subtropical climate provides summer averages in the mid to high 90s with little rain. Winter temperatures average highs of 60s and 70s with lows in the 40s. General Information about Austin

Named after the father of Texas, Stephen F. Austin, the city was established in the 1830s on the banks of the Colorado River. With over one and a half million residents, it is now the fourth largest city in Texas and has become known as a center of innovation in technology and the arts.

The city has three nicknames: "Live Music Capital of the World" to reflect the "creative economy" that brings millions of dollars annually for the city; "The ATX" for the first letter of Austin and TX for Texas; and "City of the Violet Crown" which may have been in honor of an O. Henry short story.
