Spectrolab Inc. is a unit of The Boeing Company and the world's largest manufacturer of space and terrestrial solar cells. They claim to be leaders in commercial solar cell innovation. They have been supplying compound semiconductors (in the form of solar cells and panels) to the space industry for the last 40 years. Spectrolab panels are typically not used for residential purposes.
Spectrolab was founded in 1956 and acquired by Hughes Electronics Corporation in 1975. The Boeing Company acquired Spectrolab in October 2000. In 1958, Spectrolab supplied body-mounted solar panels to the satellite Pioneer 1. With the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, a Spectrolab product became the first solar cell panel on the moon. Spectrolab also supplied the solar cells in the solar panels on the International Space Station.
