About Kentucky Roofing

Protecting the structure of your home includes the installation and maintenance of a roof that suits your home and your environment. The quality of materials, workmanship, installation and subsequent repairs contribute to the potential lifespan of your roof and your home. Homeowners in Kentucky have a number of resources at their disposal.

Certification Process

The State of Kentucky does not license roofing professionals. However, the Kentucky Roofing Contractors Association (KRCA) has established a program for certifying roofing professionals in an effort to bring consistent and reliable services to homeowners in Kentucky.

To gain certification from the KRCA, contractors must:

  • carry a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance;
  • post a $10,000 bond;
  • sign and agree to abide by a strict code of ethics; and
  • attend at least 10 hours of continuing education annually.

Guarding Against the Elements

A homeowner's greatest concern with regard to roofing issues is moisture. Kentucky is naturally a humid and rainy state. On average, the state sees 44.5 inches of rain each year and 18 inches of snow. Humidity ranges between 58% to 81%. With such heavy rain and snowfall, roofing projects must be carefully scheduled, and often completed in stages to ensure minimal risk of water damage.

Potential Problems

Weather is the single largest cause of roof damage. In Kentucky, falling trees, high winds, and other weather related issues cause significant damage. Beware of ice dams, a circumstance caused when the heat from the interior of the home causes ice to melt and then refreeze in a ridge along the edge of the roof, preventing water and melting snow to drain away. Ice dams are best prevented by controlling the loss of heat from your home. If you find you have an ice dam, take very special care when removing the snow, as roof rakes and push brooms often cause damage to roofing materials.

Energy Efficient Options in Kentucky

Energy Star markets a line of reflective roofing products which are available to homeowners in Kentucky. By redirecting the sun's rays, roof temperatures may be lowered by up to 100 degrees. This reduces the amount of air conditioning required to cool a home, and contributes greatly to the overall energy efficiency of the home.
